How to Prepare for a Career as a Massage Therapist

How to Prepare for a Career as a Massage Therapist

The current state of the economy has resulted in job loss concerns, pay decreases, a housing crisis, individual and business bankruptcies and a range of other issues. These concerns are compounded by the present political tensions, constant terror threats and rapidly changing environmental issues. Add to these general worries the daily stressors of work, family, and endless responsibilities which must be attended to with a limited amount of time and resources and it is astounding that the majority of the population manages to remain sane. The need and demand for professional services which provide relief from the mental and physical effects of living in an increasingly fast paced and frantic society is substantial. Massage therapy is the profession which responds to this need and, as a result, is experiencing substantial job growth.

Massage therapists use touch to provide relief from both mental and physical stress and to promote health. There are more than eighty types of massage, labeled modalities, each of which attends to a different problem or area of the body. These include Swedish massage, deep-tissue massage, acupressure, sports massage, neuromuscular massage and reflexology. Some modalities are intended to provide stress relief, enhance relaxation or to treat muscle injuries. Massage therapists often select an area of specialization and sometimes choose to work exclusively with certain types of clients: such as pregnant women, elderly clients or athletes. Specialization allows massage therapists to develop an expertise in a specific area which can translate into more clients.

Job growth, according to the United States Department of Labor, is expected to increase substantially in the massage therapy profession. The increase of job openings will be much more rapid for the massage therapy profession than for many other professions. The projected increase of 19 percent over the next eight years is directly attributed to all of the stressors and factors discussed previously. The demand for massage therapy professionals and massage therapy is causing an increase in the number of spa and resort facility openings. Massage clinics, a cheaper alternative to spas and resorts, are also experiencing an increase in the number of facilities opening. The affordability of these clinics is making massage services accessible to a larger segment of the population and correspondingly increasing the number of individuals seeking the services of a massage therapy professional.

Five best home spa treatments for your feet

Five best home spa treatments for your feet

Your feet need as much love and care like the rest of your body. You can pamper them in style without blowing up your monthly budget on a spa. Your kitchen has all the items you will require. All you need to do is create a spa-like ambience with muted lights, some music in the background, and scented candles to complete the picture.
1.Ayurvedic treat
For this foot care treatment, prepare a large tub of hot water with 2 tablespoons of sea salt, and a mixture of fresh herbs like lavender and thyme in 250 ml water. Soak your feet in this solution for 15 minutes to disinfect and rejuvenate them

You can follow this up with an invigorating foot rub. Mix half teaspoons each of cider vinegar, lavender oil, powdered alum and three tablespoons of sunflower oil in a glass bottle. Warm this over a pan of hot water. After cooling, pour it on a rough towel to scrub your feet and exfoliate the dead skin. Round off the process by massaging the toes, instep, arches, heel and ankles with almond or olive oil. The improved circulation will make your feet feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

2.Paraffin wrap
Melt four bars of food grade paraffin wax in a bowl and mix along with 20 drops of lavender or chamomile oil and three ounces of any cooking oil. Pour this mix in a plastic tub and cool till a layer forms over the surface.

Wash your feet and apply olive oil over them. Check the temperature and dip each foot into the molten wax. Allow the wax to set before you dip in the other one. Repeat till you get a thick wax coat on both the feet. Wrap each foot in individual plastic bags and cover them with a blanket to keep them warm. After half an hour, peel the wax off your feet. Now massage your feet with olive oil to keep them soft, supple and smooth.

3.Vanilla milk treat
Try this vanilla treat for dry feet, especially during winter. Boil two litres of whole milk till it thickens, and pour it into a large tub. Cool to a comfortable temperature and add three drops of vanilla extract. Soak your feet in the tub containing milk for 15 minutes. Now clean your feet with plain water and exfoliate the dead skin with a paste of coarse salt and cooking oil. Rinse them with warm water and dry with a clean towel. Round off this treatment with a circular massage using milk cream and fresh turmeric pulp.

4.The honey almond glow
Mix and blend seven cups of hot water, two cups of full cream and a cupful of honey in a big bowl. Soak your feet in this solution for 15 minutes. Rinse in warm water. Rub a paste made of finely chopped almonds and some milk cream on your feet in a circular motion. Massage them with half teaspoon almond oil making sure to press on all the pressure points.

5.The Vitamin E massage
Soak your feet for 15 minutes in a tub of hot water and a capful of baby shampoo. Scrub them with coarsely powdered sugar in a light circular motion and then wash with warm water. Mix half a tablespoon of either, almond or olive oil, with cocoa butter and four vitamin E capsules. Massage your feet using this moisturizer generously. Wear your socks and slide your feet into two plastic bags. Secure them with rubber bands. Now put your feet, covered with the bags, into a tub of warm water for ten minutes. The moisturizer will get absorbed by the time you remove them from the water. Wipe off the excess with a tissue.

After every treatment, push back the cuticles on the toes with an orange stick and clean the nail beds. You may want to complete the spa experience with an application of your choice of the latest nail varnish.

Smooth Scaly Body Skin:---

Spa Treatment The Maui Sugar Cane Exfoliation for 10 minutes is popular at Maui, Hawaiis Grand Wailea Hotel Spa Grande: it packs sugar, macadamia-nut and coconut oils to exfoliate and moisturize the skin. Sugar polishes skin almost as effectively as professional-grade glycolic acid, but it offers the added benefit of helping soften rough spots, explains Maui-based Dana Roberts, founder of Malie Kauai skin-care products.

At Home Spa Treatment Massage in Tahitian Noni Moa Sugar Scrub, containing sesame-seed and macadamia-nut oils: or Malie Kauais Pikake Body Cream, a blend of macadamia-nut oil and aloe.

Soften Dry Hands And Feet:---

Spa Treatment Rice water is a favorite moisturizing remedy for dry hands and feet in Malaysia, says Jok Keng, a practitioner of Chinese traditional medicine at the Spa Village in Pangkor Laut, Malaysia. Here, rice is soaked overnight to extract the starch and soften the granules. Keng then blends the water and rice into a paste, adding a pinch of turmeric [known for its anti-inammatory properties]: the mixture, he says, improves blood circulation too.

At Home Spa Treatment Massage feet with Fresh Rice Dry Oil, which has anti-inflammatory arnica: on hands, use Origins Spice Odyssey Foaming Body Rub with anti-inflammatory turmeric and coriander.

Your own Home Spa

Your own Home Spa

Here are some essentials you’d require in giving yourself a soothing home spa experience, at a low budget, leaving you feeling revived and rejuvenated:

1. The three basic things you would require for your own spa is a tub, a bathroom and privacy! Yes privacy! That means no interruption, no intrusion at all! Whether it’s a phone call or someone banging your door down, even slightest disturbance can make you end up making you feel rather tenser and agitated. So make sure you have the perfect environment around you for your spa arrangements.

2. Put on some light music. They don’t say it for nothing that music is the food for one’s soul. If you can, make necessary arrangements to put on some light soothing music in your bathroom, trust me, you’d be more than pleased. It would help you relax further and brush off the stress, and take you in a more tranquil and tension-free world.

3. Lighten up the room with candles and if you have aroma candles, nothing can be better help in relieving stress than some light sweet odor surrounding you, bringing you from a stressed and tired state into a stress-relieving and calming mood.

4. The best part about creating a home spa of your own is that you can use your creativity in providing yourself the luxury bath using your favorite products. Lavender-scented bubble bath. It provides you the benefits of aromatherapy to appease you. Body scrubs are also useful products as they help in exfoliating skin. Among other products that you can add to your spa expericenc is skin-moisturizing oil which can help in giving you the essential skin nourishment and make the pampered feeling last longer.

5. Spas aren’t just about giving you a relaxed feeling, infact they can help you in further enhancing your beauty. Use a conditioner for your hair and a purifying masque on your face. This will help your face and scalp feel good, leaving you feeling and looking more beautiful. Using a loofah on your dry skin help in removing the dead skin layer and give you a soothing feeling. Also, scrubbing away your feet with a pumice stone can be a little more effort, but the results are always satisfying and benefitting.

6. After stepping out of the tub, apply a rich moisturizing cream to your skin and a fresh coat of nail polish to your toes. Pamper yourself the way you want. You aim to make yourself look and feel beautiful.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is a specialty massage that uses smooth, heated stones. They are often basalt, a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well, but they can be other types. The heat is both deeply relaxing and helps tight muscles release.

What Happens During a Hot Stone Massage?

Before you arrive, the massage therapist sanitizes the stones (very important!) and heats them in 120 to 150 degree water.

During the massage, the therapist warms up the body with traditional Swedish massage, then massages you while holding a heated stone. As the stone cools, the therapist replaces it with another.

The therapist might also leave heated stones in specific points along your spine, in the palms of your hand, on your belly, or even between your toes to improve the flow of energy in your body.

If you have inflammation or muscle injury, cold stones are sometimes used.

Spa Facials

Spa Facials

A facial is a skin treatment that deeply cleanses and maintains the skin by exfoliating excess dead skin cells. This explains the benefits of facials, how often you should get them, and what to expect from your esthetician.

Facials are the second most popular spa treatment, after massage. They promote clean, beautiful skin through deep cleansing and a treatment that addresses your specific skin type.

Things you will need
Facial moisturizer, facial cleanser, face masks, cotton balls, towels, large bowl of hot steamy water, face scrub and eye cream.

Time required : 30- 45 minutes

The Process
Relax your mind: To relax the mind, lure your senses by turning off the bright lights. Light some aromatic candles in the bathroom with a soft music at the background.

Cleanse your skin: Cleansers help to get rid of dirt and make up without any traces. With the help of a milk cleanser clean the skin gently in a circular motion. Apply the cleanser to your face and throat, and use upward circular motions, to all the way up to the hairline, and down to the breastbone. After a fine massage, rinse well with warm water and pat it dry

Exfoliate : Exfoliate your face with a gentle face scrub. You can use a grain-based scrub like oatmeal and apricot Concentrate on the areas around your nose and forehead. For a combination skin, work harder on the areas that are more oily. Make sure to use scrubs that don't dry your face. Rinse it with lukewarm water.

Steaming time: Steaming is essential as it opens the pores and increases circulation on the skin's surface. Select herbs like s lavender, mint or calendula for dry skin or mint, lavender, rose and witch hazel, for oily skin or try calendula, chamomile, or comfrey for sensitve skin and boil it in a bowl of water. Pour hot steamy water in a large bowl and bring it to the place you are going to do the facial. Lean your face over the bowl about a foot away and cover your head and the bowl to preserve the steam. If you feel a burning sensation then stop for few seconds and repeat it. Keep the steam going for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Tonic: As the pores are open, your skin is in ideal state for maximum absorption. So, gently massage a regenerating serum or tonic at this stage.

Spa Treatment

Spa Treatment

A spa is always thought to be an exotic place and is often considered out of reach.

Ingredients: The following ingredients are required for the spa preparation. A fine sea salt, honey, distilled water, and a few drops of lemongrass, rosewood, ylang ylang, an aromatic blend and Rhassoul. Rhassoul is difficult to get and it is found in the Atlas mountains.

It has many benefits as it aids in the detoxification, cleansing and degreasing process. It is available at most health food stores. If you cannot find it, you can substitute green clay in its place.

Preparation: Mix half a cup or three fourths of a cup of distilled water with a tablespoon of honey. If necessary, the honey may be heated. Add to this mixture the essential oils of lemongrass, rosewood and ylang ylang, the sea salt and one packet of Rhassoul.

Application: Prepare the room for the treatment. Warm four bath towels by wetting them and setting them at a low heat. Use these to cover the massage table.

You can also use a plastic sheet to cover the massage table and minimize mess. The person getting the massage should wear as little clothing as possible. A two piece bathing suit that is disposable is recommended.

The next step is to evenly apply the paste all over the client’s body. Once the application has been completed, wrap the client in the plastic sheets and towels. Ensure that the client has enough breathing room and is not uncomfortable. This mixture should be left on for at least a half an hour.

During this time, a face, neck and head massage may be completed. Care should be taken to heat the towels as needed to maintain warmth, but to ensure that the client is not too hot. The paste is then removed with a wet towel.

How You Take Care Of Your Skin

How You Take Care Of Your Skin

The NUMBER ONE rule for having good, clear skin is to clean it the right way. A clean skin is a healthy skin.

Proper cleansing removes the irritating and poisonous agents and germs that could hurt your skin or, by absorption through the skin, actually cause harm to other parts of your body. There are many ways to clean your skin, but the good, old-fashioned soap and water routine is really the best, most efficient and least expensive method.

What are some of the things you want to wash away to keep your skin clean and healthy-looking?

First of all, you have substances produced by your own body:

Dead, horny cells from the very upper layers of the skin. If these are not regularly washed off, your complexion will be dull and lifeless.

Sweat from the millions of sweat glands all over your body. A lot of this sweat is responsible for body odor.

Sebum, the oily material that gives the skin its softness and elasticity. When this oily substance builds up, acne pimples result.

Ear wax and old hair and nail cells, just sitting there on your skin, up to no good.

Then there are the substances coming from the environment:

Pollutants found in the air, such as smoke, soot, dust, pollens, and exhaust fumes from cars, busses, trucks.

Materials around your work place, such as grease and grime from gas stations and fast-food restaurants.

Things found in your own home. These could be paints, glues, resins, clothing, bedding, carpeting, house spraysÂ* even belly-button lint!

All the bottles, jars, and sprays of "who-knows-what" you apply to your skin by design, such as cosmetics, suntan lotions, perfumes, and surface medications.

Various" friendly" germs which live normally on your skin.

Regular washing with soap and water rinses and flushes this skin garbage away, cleans the pores, reduces odor, and cuts down the risk of infection and disease. Your clean skin will look soft, glowing, and healthy. Its circulation will improve, encouraging the growth of healthy cells, and your skin will breathe better. All this, by just washing your face three times a day.

A word on cleansing creams used mostly to remove make-up. While your make-up seems to disappear, youand#39:re actually left with an irritating combination of cream, leftover make-up, and other impurities that were already onthe skin . This leftover mess not only irritates your skin but also can clog the pores, leading to blackheads and whiteheads. If you try to remove it with tissues, you only further clog up the pore openings.

Let’s face it, only soap and water will really get your skin clean. Washing your face three times a day with a mild, gentle soap is the most important advice I can give. If you want to take off make-up with a cleansing cream, follow it up with soap and water to get rid of all that mess than can only cause problems.

The kind of soap-you use on your face is a matter of personal choice, but watch out for the ones that are irritating or canand#39:t be completely rinsed off. The so-called cold cream soaps, although they are fairly mild and gentle, always leave a film of cold cream, plugging up the oil glands which are already working hard to get rid of their normal oil supply. The deodorant and antibacterial soaps can be especially irritating to facial skin because they leave a residue of chemicals on your skin to destroy germs. If you have a body odor problem, use these types of soaps only below the neck.

Vitamins for Skin

Vitamins for Skin

1.Vitamin A :- The Strongest Wrinkle Fighter.
Vitamin A is essential for the formation of healthy skin
cells.Deficiency of Vitamin A over a long period of time can lead to thick itchy dry skin which can be prone to infection. Taking vitamin A as a supplement can also be helpful for treating many skin disorders such as acne eczema rashes and infections.

2.Vitamin B :- The Skin Conditioner.
The B vitamins are important for skin and nerve health. It may be helpful to take if you suffer from dull skin.

3.Vitamin C :- The Skins Defense System.
One of vitamin Cs main role is the manufacture of collagen the substance which forms the basis of connective tissue or the glue that holds the skin cells together. Collagen fibres act to hold the skin taut and firm as we age. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant which means it is able to neutralise the dangerous molecules called free radicals that form when the body is exposed to sunlight smog and cigarette smoke.

4.Vitamin E :- For Extra Protection.
Both vitamin C and vitamin E have been shown to protect the skin against sun damage. Vitamin E is an oil so it helps to soften the complexion. Taken as a supplement vitamin E is absorbed into cell membranes where it acts as an antioxidant protecting the cells from damage.

5.Vitamin E comes in different forms :- the more potent version is alpha tocopherol. You can add the contents of a vitamin E capsule to your regular moisturiser.

Oil Cleansing Method

Oil Cleansing Method

First and foremost, this is typically done in the evening, prior to bed. There should be no need for deep cleansing in the morning if youand#39:re waking up with skin cleansed the night before. In the morning, a quick wipe with a warm washcloth should suffice. We donand#39:t want to overcleanse our skin as this will serve only to irritate and cause more oil production. The objective of using this method is to deep clean while balancing our skins oil production at the same time.

1. Youand#39:ll need a soft washcloth, your oil blend, and hot, running water.

2. Pour a generous puddle of oil into the palm of your hand. Roughly, the size of a quarter, but more is acceptable. Rub your hands together to warm the oil and smooth over your face.

3. Begin massaging the oil into your face. This will remove makeup, dirt, and other impurities, so there is no need to use a makeup remover or wash your face prior to the massage. I have found that this removes even my stubborn waterproof mascara and concealor.

4. Using slow, firm motions across the skin, massage the oil deeply into your pores. Take your time and focus on your problem areas. You want the oil to work into your pores so that blackheads and the like can be dissolved and steamed away.

5. As youand#39:re massaging, let your mind drift off to something calming and breathe deeply. Take this time to relax and release some of the stress that your body is harboring. Sit down, breathe deeply, and take your time. Give the oil enough time to work on dissolving the impurities in your pores and give yourself enough time to unwind. Picture what your face would look like if it were completely clear and free from blemishes. Focus on that image and know that it is attainable. Trust that it is attainable. Accept that it is attainable. You can have clear skin, free of blemishes and you will have clear skin, free of blemishes. Focus on perfect skin and breathe deeply.

6. Once youand#39:re satisfied that your pores are saturated and youand#39:re feeling calm, pick up your washcloth and soak it in clean, steamy water. We want the water to be warm enough to open your pores and remove the oil. Cool water will not open your pores, nor will it remove the oil efficiently. Weand#39:re not scalding our skin, weand#39:re steaming to coax our pores to release the oil carrying the impurities.
Weand#39:re essentially steaming our skin as an esthetician would, but without the luxury of a steam machine.

7. Hold the washcloth to cover your face. Allow it to stay until it cools. You will feel your pores releasing the impurities. Wipe the oil gently away and rinse the washcloth well in hot, running water. Hold the washcloth to your face again, allowing it to cool. Wipe gently, rinse well, and repeat two or three more times. Avoid any temptation to scrub, as youand#39:ll find itand#39:s completely unnecessary and your skin will be soft, smooth, and free of flakes without the additional manual exfoliation and irritation that will result. Impurities, dead skin cells, and bacteria will be gently swept away.

8. Have no fear of the oil, as the steamy washcloth will remove it. The Castor Oil, though it is an oil, will help with the removal of the other oils, as well. It is our main cleansing oil and is easily removed with warm water.

9. If your skin feels tight, take a tiny drop of your oil blend, rub it between your clean, damp palms and pat it onto your damp skin. Gently massage any oil residue into your skin so there is no film of oil left sitting on the surface. Your skin should now glow!
